Day 804 – Australia – NSW [Berremangra to Yass]

22/08/22

44.5km

From Berremangra (New South Wales) to Yass (New South Wales)

Australia

A windy and very hilly day on the Hume Highway

On the old Hume Highway at the start – stunning

The day started off rather warm and inviting. I was able, almost from the start, to join the Old Hume Highway – now a small country road running parallel to the main highway. Alas, after just a few kilometers on it, I hit a gate. The gate was closed and there was a warning about poison baits. Too bad, that meant more running on the Highway.

A moment of calm on the windy highway

I obliged and then… the wind started blowing. Quite strong! So strong that at times, when a big lorry would pass me by too close, I was almost stepping backwards, had to close my eyes, hands over my hat and bent in half until the blow passed. It was quite an annoyance! Many truck drivers, when they could, would change lanes upon seeing me, they must have known.

Met by James as I entered Yass

Today was also very hilly. According to Garmin I hit the highest point of the day at nearly 700m+ and there were a lot of hills. Tonight we’re staying in Yass. A fine historic little town, only about 50km from the capital of Australia (note for my European readers: the capital of Australia is NOT Sydney, it is Canberra!).
