Meeting Phil Essam (Pdt of the WRA) on a sunny and warm day on the Hume Highway

The dog on a tuckerbox – near Gundagai

After yesterday’s non stop rain, I appreciated waking up to clear and dry skies. The morning started with a drive up to my start point, and we stopped by at the “Dog on the Tuckerbox” spot. Yesterday as I ran past I was on the wrong side of the Highway and didn’t bother crossing with all the rain. A monument to an Australian poem “Bullocky Bill” counting the misfortunes of a bullock driver with his dog sitting on or spoiling the food in his tuckerbox. Unusual sight!

What a joy to meet Phil!

At around km14 I was met by Phil Essam. Phil is President of the WRA (world runners association) which has been quite instrumental in my run around the world. The mere existence of the club, with members and a set of clear rules helped shape my journey and garner advice from other runners. Phil won’t be able to be in Sydney for my arrival on the 30th due to work commitments, so he made a point of driving on a Sunday morning, from Canberra, to come and greet me. He offered me an ANZAC brown buff, which I will keep preciously along with other world-run gifts. We had a nice chat and then it was time to hit the tarmac again.

The view from the office today

A word about the pain I had felt in my leg 3 days ago. It seems to be absolutely fine when I run, and I’ve been running my daily marathons ever since without a pain. Focusing greatly on my landing and on which muscles to engage. The problem now seems to be when I don’t run! When I walk, I sometimes register a very sharp pain in the pelvic region, which I am not quite sure how to address. Well, as long as it doesn’t bother me when I run! And I still haven’t managed to buy a new pair of shoes…
