Running past Nullarbor Roadhouse and the Head of the Australian Bight, great day on the road

These treeless plains

I don’t know how long it’s going to last, but the current weather is ideal for running. It’s winter here in Australia yet I’m back in my shorts and tshirt. At night though it does get really cold and dip below 5 Celsius which can be felt when sleeping in the motorhome. I cannot imagine what it would have been like to camp in a tent at night, had James not offered to support me through the crossing!

Running past the head of the bight

I ran past the Nullarbor roadhouse and then crossed a sign that read “Western end of treeless plain” – and then 20km or more later another that read “Eastern end of treeless plain”. I took a picture of two trees I sighted by the side of the road – probably been planted there by some facetious people! Otherwise it really was the most barren I have seen these plains since I started the crossing.

That’s as much as I managed to snap!

I finished the run about 20km past the “head of the bight”. James picked me up at the finish and we drove there, hoping to spot some whales before the sunset. As we drove through the gate, a board indicated that 9 whales were currently spotted at the bay. We walked to the spotting point and we peered out over the tranquil sea. Then we saw them! I spotted 5 of them, though it is not picture-friendly. They were not breaching or diving, merely floating below the surface, and every now and then, you’d see the length of the whale going slightly above water level. I was quite pleased with that!
