South America

Sunny and hot in the Aconcagua Valley, past the foothills of the Andes

Arid mountainsides

It was a bit hot today! I had started much later than usual, courtesy of a rather lazy morning. And I paid the price for it as I was running all along on a road that did not have any shade to offer. San Felipe, where I ran today is at the heart of the Aconcagua Valley. Water flows down from the Aconcagua mountain, towering at nearly 7,000m, the highest mountain outside Asia. And it provides irrigation to the many vineyards. What a sight. Tall arid mountains and rich green valleys, full of vineyards and orchards…

Lush green valleys

I was lucky to be sheltered from traffic the whole way today. I am still able to avoid the main big road that leads to the Argentina border (ruta 60). But soon I won’t have a choice. It has a wide shoulder and I should be fairly safe going forward. Today there was no issue though and I had the luxury of a cycling path most of the way.

My safe cycling path today

The next two days are going to be interesting as I am going to reach almost 3000m+ elevation. I have been looking forward to it – and also it’s time to say how relieved I am to not have to push my loaded stroller up the mountains. I had 1 month ½ to adjust to a new way of running and I feel I’m just about getting there in terms of being 100% comfortable. I can now carry the load of my water and equipment in my backpack and not feel the loss of my companion stroller!
