Day 648 – South America – Chile [San Felipe to Los Riecillos]

29/01/22

45km

From San Felipe (Chile) to Los Riecillos (Chile)

South America

The Andes crossing has started! Easy today, two hard days will follow

Different kind of vehicles

I left San Felipe this morning, heading east towards the big mountains. I am looking at three days of running uphill. Today was the smallest of the three: only 700m+ ascent over the course of the run, bringing me to 1,300m elevation. This will be followed by two runs of 1,600m+ and 1,000m+ positive ascent each. The hard part is yet to come!

Happy to be in the mountains

I was happy enough to run amongst the mountains today and leave the cities behind. I ran out of San Felipe and past Los Andes – then I was on a country road, surrounded by the arid mountains I described yesterday and the Aconcagua River to my right. Ran past a few horse riders, saw workers dry fruits out in the sun… It got again very hot today. The gradient of the run was very gentle and I was able to run the whole way.

The Andes, Chile side

Tomorrow is also my last full running day in Chile before crossing into Argentina. I will need to take a two days break in order to sort out the Covid-era border crossing formalities (including PCR test, sworn affidavit, mobility pass application). I have become quite cautious and somewhat apprehensive about crossing borders these days. There have been a few hiccups on my side since Covid changed the rules!
