Day 646 – South America – Chile [Quillota to Purehue]

27/01/22

42km

From Quillota (Chile) to Purehue (Chile)

South America

A sunny day inland on country roads, seeing mountains appearing all around

Pre-Andes scenery

The change of scenery keeps getting more and more obvious. As the run progressed further east today, mountains started appearing, out of the faint veil of haze that kept hiding it in the early morning. I tried not to tell myself they look impressive, as I am well aware this is only the beginning – the true high summits of the Andes lay behind.

Avocado is in season

I ran past the villages of Quillota and La Calera. I was surprised to see that the strawberry shacks I saw on the side of the road for the past few weeks, are now replaced by avocado selling points. It was everywhere. I got to see some of the trees as well, with the ripe fruits hanging low. It was very tempting. I satisfied my appetite with some of the figs however, which also are in season here.

I have one more easy run coming up tomorrow, taking me closer to the foot of the Andes. And then it will be time to hit the high road and get on with the endless switchbacks that I have been longing for! The weather is getting much hotter and I wonder what it will be like as I go higher and higher. I always carry a light jacket in my backpack just in case, I’m sure it will be enough.
