Day 645 – South America – Chile [Valparaiso to Quillota]

26/01/22

45km

From Valparaiso (Chile) to Quillota (Chile)

South America

The last 20km on the Pacific coast, to the Dunes of Concon, then finally turning east towards the Andes

Running on the coast, Valapraiso – Vina Del Mar – Concon

As I left Valparaiso this morning, I savored my final 20km of coastal run. From now on, it will be another 1,500km before I reach another ocean, the Atlantic, when I reach the coast of Buenos Aires. The skies were clouded, making for an easy morning run. I ran past Vina del Mar, then up to the natural dunes of Concon. These dunes date from the Quaternary Period and are now used for sandboarding – as well as being a host to a wide variety of fauna.

The Inca Tern

I saw a few colonies of sea lions resting on the rocks, off the coast of Concon. I also saw cormorans and a group of Inca Terns. Their habitat is the Humboldt Current, and they are recognisable by their distinctive red beak and colour-matching feet, yellow cheeks and white mustache on both sides of the head. What a sight.. I also ran past one (of the 30 or so) Thinker of Rodin bronze statue in Vina del Mar. Then in Concon, it was time to turn east, inland. One sight I missed though, is that of the Humboldt Penguins. I had been hoping to see them today… well… I’ll have to come back then!

Can you spot the Andes in the background?!

In the background, as I moved inland, I could barely see the Andes. A veil of haze hid them from sight, the outline was just perceptible. I have left Valparaiso and Concon at sea level – and by the end of the week, I will reach around 4,000m altitude by the time I cross the Chile/Argentina border. How exciting…
