Day 507 – US – North Dakota [Belfield to Dickinson]

24/08/21

33km

From Belfielf (North Dakota) to Dickinson (North Dakota)

North America

Another mighty windy day on a straight line run to Dickinson – and onto a rest day

That view in the morning as I press the “start” button on the GPS…

Radical change of scenery today. I left the beautiful Theodore Roosevelt National Park and its awesome canyons behind. Today was all flat, fields left and right and a straight line of asphalt to Dickinson. Not much distraction on the way.

Grey skies above farmlands

I had the wind on the side for the best part of the run. Then it turned as I approached Dickinson and it was headwind all the way. The last few kilometers were tough. Wind is definitely the most difficult condition to run against. Extreme cold and heat are tough, but there are coping strategies you can resort to. Extreme uphill is hard but you have a visual representation of what you are up against – and there is a start and an end. With wind however.. It’s very difficult to grasp the strength and to gauge the effort you have to deploy – the invisible beast! (and BoB the stroller does give a fair amount of resistance).

I was thankful it was a shorter run again, below 40km. And I have now reached Dickinson where I will enjoy a rest day tomorrow. I am seeing the slow transition into autumn at the moment. It’s beautiful and though it is still August, I can definitely tell the change. Temperatures are now in the low 20 (Celsius), the air is much cooler in the morning, the light, the colors are changing too. It reminds me of running from northern Greece into Bulgaria last September. I ran up the mountain pass and all together into a new country and a new season. Here it is a bit more subtle, but noticeable the same way.
