Day 506 – US – North Dakota [Medora to Belfield]

From Medora (North Dakota) to Belfield (North Dakota)

North America

Windy day, the canyons, bisons and meeting very kind people on my way again

Painted Canyons, North Dakota

I mistakenly mentioned the Painted Canyon in yesterday’s blog. Though I’ve been running through the canyons since I entered Teddy Roosevelt National Park, I would only pass by the specific “painted canyons” place today. And how breathtaking that was. A sort of mini Grand-Canyon if that can help picture it. All sorts of wild animals live and roam free on its ground, wild horses, bisons, elks.. I stayed there for a while. I was in no rush to head back on the road, it was very windy today.

With Dan Miller, journey-cyclist

On the road again I saw for the first time in my life a bison! There was a group of them. As they were on the other side of the road I could not picture them quite clearly, but I was pleased enough being able to observe them from a distance. Impressive creatures with a truly astonishing shape. I resumed running and a few miles down the road I was passed by Dan Miller on his bike. Dan is cycling across the US, he started out from Seattle as well. We chatted for a little while, it’s nice to meet fellow travellers.

With Jan, from Fargo

I reached Belfield and headed straight to the saloon. A couple sitting next to me asked me if I was on a mission. I was a bit surprised. But Jan explained that they have spotted me 3 times on the road over the past two days, including yesterday’s torrential rain episode. So we chatted some more and as I shared my route with Jan, she offered to host me when I pass by Detroit Lakes (east of Fargo) in 2 weeks time! How generous. And it did not stop there. As I proceeded to settle my bill later on, the waitress told me Jan and Gerald had paid for my meal when they left. I was very touched… and now looking forward to reaching Fargo!
