North America

Crossing into North Dakota on a moody day, with rain and sun, and the awesome painted canyons of Medora

The skies tell today’s story

Today was gonna be a moody day. I left under heavy rain and by km9 I got another flat tyre. Except this time, I did not have a spare tube handy. So there I was, by the side of the road, cold, swept by the wind and rained over, fixing the puncture. Not much fun! I resumed the run and the rain stopped. As if by magic, the wind switched from east to west and it was on my back. How nice. Sometimes it feels I have to pay the price for something nice to happen. I paid my dues today!

With Deputy Sheriff Corbin Snyder

I crossed into North Dakota (“Be legendary” is the state’s motto) and the skies cleared, the landscapes became awesome. I was about to enter the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, the painted canyons. How truly stunning. As I was absentmindedly running and taking pictures on the safety lane of the Interstate, the Sheriff’s car pulled behind me… again! Deputy Sheriff Corbin Snyder came out to meet me. We had a very friendly chat, he wished me good luck on the journey and even agreed to a cheeky selfie together! Here you are, Sheriff, on my blog today 🙂

Today’s landscapes

As I reached Medora, the skies opened again and I was drenched from head to toe in no time. I ran the last 5km to the motel in dire conditions. As I reached reception, drenched and dripping, I was welcomed by a group of people who had seen me run on the Interstate earlier in the day. We chatted. Soon my early check in request was granted and I got an upgrade. I have a jacuzzi in my room tonight! The best luxury I have had since the world-run started. It’s awesome to have such perks at the back of a long day of running in trying conditions. I sure do appreciate it!

Near Medora, ND

Medora is a tourist destination, the first I have met in a long time. The main street is buzzing with activity, the saloon is full, people walking around in the streets. It’s been a long time since I have seen such a lively little town!
