Day 504 – US – Montana [Glendive to Wibaux]

21/08/21

43km

From Glendive (Montana) to Wibaux (Montana)

North America

Sunny chilly run, like a first day of autumn a month early – and last run in Montana

Chilly morning on the empty road to Wibaux

Temperatures were in the lower 10’s as I left this morning. Bright blue sunny skies but definitely chilly, it felt like the first day of autumn – only a month too early. Around me, the badlands formations, results of thousands of years of deposition and erosion. In the morning light, the ridges and canyons give a wonderful array of colours and depths, quite a show…

Montana – Badlands formations

This is also my last day in Montana. I entered the State July 20th from Mullan (Idaho) to Haugan. It has been quite a journey of contrasts I realise. One of isolation mostly. But also one of great connections, as I had to rely on local communities to help me through long segments of road with nowhere for me to stay. I have been overwhelmed with the response of the locals and their willingness to chip in and lend a hand. Montana will keep a special place in my heart.

My motel tonight – Rodeway Inn, Wibaux..!

I was also looking to see if yesterday’s long run had any impact on my body. As far as I can tell, nothing really. I had a longer night than usual, maybe 1hr more sleep. But other than that, the body felt exactly the same as I left this morning, and it seems the pace was once again constant throughout. I will repeat the experience of a 60km+ in a few weeks and then I will decide if I should incorporate more of these going forward.

Note: the name of the town derives from Pierre Wibaux, a french man who emigrated in the late 1800’s and became a prominent local cattle ranger. The town prospered after him – and the proximity of the Northern Pacific Railroad.
