Day 503 – US – Montana [Terry to Glendive]

20/08/21

63.2km

From Terry (Montana) to Glendive (Montana)

North America

A very rainy and cold day, the first 60km+ of the world-run and 4 flat tyres

The cloud cover investing every square inch of the morning skies

I had arbitrarily set the average daily distance for the world-run at a marathon a day. But since the world-run started, I progressively venture into new distances. Last year I did my first 50km+ and having done a reasonable amount of 50-55kms runs, I recently ran 58km. Today I was curious to see what it would feel like to run over 60km in a day. The conditions happened to be perfect for it and it all went very well.

A glimpse of the Yellowstone River again at dawn

Again it’s not the physical aspect of the longer run that I was wondering about. But rather the mental side, how to approach the day differently – as today’s 63km represented close to 7hrs of running. I set out at 6am and it turned out to be a heavy rainy day. And cold. The result of that is that I took nearly no breaks. The only ones I took were used to fixed flat tyres, it was my lucky day and I got 4 of them! It meant I was done before 2pm – and that leaves a reasonable amount of spare time to recover and enjoy the rest of the day.

Last clear picture before the skies opened

I noticed I started to get hungry after the 6th hour of running – where I normally don’t feel the need to eat on the run. It seems it’s a distance that I would be able to run every now and then when required – I probably wouldn’t do it every day, and I was lucky with the weather. All in all, a fab day on the road. Apologies for the paucity of pictures – my phone was locked in its waterproof sleeve for the best part of the run.

How did I get 4 flat tyres? That’s very unlucky. My fingers were too numb from the cold rain, I could not fix patches today. I used all of my 3 spare tubes – and then when the 4th flat came around, I just kept pumping the tube every few kilometers. I’ll have to find out tonight what caused both wheels to go flat.
