Day 395 – EU – Italy [Rest Day in Vasto]

Rest day in Vasto (Italy, Europe)

A quiet lazy day in the beautiful town of Vasto, getting organised and enjoying the day off

Termoli to the far left (30km away)

As I went for a stroll around town this morning, I got to see something amazing. Perched up on the fortification wall of Vasto, I had a clear view of the whole bay. And from where I was, I could see as far as Termoli, which was my last stage before Vasto. I think it’s the first time I am really seeing what 30km look like (it was a short stage). It is quite impressive, yet it looks very small too. Anyway it was beautiful and I spotted some more “trabuccos” on the seaside.

Piazza Gabriele Rossetti Square, Vasto

Trabuccos are these wooden constructions that are used by fishermen to go out to the sea and go fishing in all weather conditions. I took a nice picture of one on Day 393 (blog image). They are typical of the regions I’m running in lately, the Gargano region (Puglia, which I just left) and Abruzzi (where I am now). They are really beautiful, even as I understand they are not much in use nowadays, but they do bring a touch of history and culture to the coastline. I should see more of them on my way tomorrow.

Palazzo d’Avalos, Vasto

I had a few tasks today which gave some structure to my day. I recorded a podcast at lunchtime (in french) for “Epic Runs”. That made for a very pleasant conversation. I worked on my stroller a little bit, as I had some issues with the wheels not freewheeling anymore. I hope I have fixed the issue now. I booked my travel plans between Trieste and Thessaloniki to ensure my continuous run to Istanbul. And after 6 months of running in places where hairdressers were closed, I managed to get an appointment… and miserably failed to show up as I fell asleep for an impromptu mid-afternoon nap! It will have to wait.

Next week I will run along the coastline, all the way up to Rimini which will be my next rest day. Counting on good weather and delicious food ahead.
