Day 109 – EU – Italy [Rest Day in Ravenna]

10/06/20

Rest day in Ravenna (Italy, Europe)

Rest and relaxation in a city filled with history – stormy weather

I had no particular expectation for this first day off since the re-start. I started with a walk to the city centre and enjoyed lunch on the “Piazza Del Popolo”.

There I witnessed an amusing scene. A very elegant and posh woman arrived by bike as it started raining. She took cover under the restaurant’s gazebo whilst giving a phone call. 5mn later a maid, dressed like a maid out of a movie, arrived, took the bicycle, the woman’s voluminous Vuitton bag and left in the rain. The elegant woman rushed to the taxi that was waiting for her and left. Ironic that it happened on the “Place of the People”!

I went over to see Dante’s Tomb (poet Dante was a resident of Ravenna and got buried there) – but it was under renovation and I could not get a proper glimpse. I saw the Basilicas of San Vitale and Sant’Appolinare, beautiful Renaissance churches and walked the narrow cobblestone streets of the city.

But the storm caught up with me and I retreated to the hotel. A beautiful city to visit if you happen to be on this coast of Italy, less than 200km South of Venice!

It seems that my legs have fully recovered from that first week back on the road. I am looking forward to the week ahead, that will see me run through Venice and finish in Trieste, in 10 days time if all goes to plan!Check my daily run GPS data on Garmin or Strava (icons on top right of your screen) – here is the map of today’s run:
