A run on “Trucks’ Highway” across the Regional Park of Po Delta

I mistook a “SS” Road for a “SR” Road whilst planning today’s run: big mistake! “SS” are national roads or “state highways” whereas “SR” are simply “regional roads”.

That’s a mistake I sure won’t reiterate! Once I was engaged on the SS309 there was simply no way I could escape and run on a quieter road: there were none! I had to run for the next 30km or so on the tiny shoulder of the road (at least there was one!) in the constant noise of trucks passing me, blowing me to the side, honking at me, incessant, all the way!

As if it was not unpleasant enough, I encountered an endless flow of roadkills: flattened Nutrias (or Coypus, whichever name is more familiar). At some point I counted there was one every 20m! This surely encouraged me to stick to my lane and make myself the tiniest (but most visible) I could be.

I wish there had been a smaller alternative road, as the region the road crossed was a beautiful Park, I even spotted some Pink Flamingos along the way.

On the bright side: my legs have totally recovered and once again feel totally fresh from the get-go. Today was the flattest of all the World Run too – I notice how the region is pancake flat and it’s the first day in a long while that I cannot see any mountain (or hill) on the horizon.

I was planning to hit the beach this afternoon – but the weather turned stormy once again. I walked the streets of Comacchio instead. I discovered a lovely little fishing village made of 13 different islets joined by bridges. Beautiful architecture again, cobblestone streets, canals and brightly painted houses and churches.
