Day 799 – Australia – NSW [Rest Day in Holbrook]

17/08/22

Rest day in Holbrook (New South Wales, Australia)

Easy going day in Holbrook, a HMS submarine and a lovely charming town

The famous submarine, Holbrook NSW

Holbrook is a charming little town, featuring a central street bordered with all sorts of shops, antique and all, and historic architecture. Most of all though, it features the HMS submarine that was commanded by Norman Douglas Holbrook during WWI. An imposing 90m long submarine. And interestingly the town that was named “Germanton” (after German pioneers) was renamed Holbrook in 1915 in honour of the submarine Lieutenant.

I took a walk around town, stopped at the local cafe for a late brunch, entered almost every shop. A quiet and nice town where everyone seems to know everyone.

I then spent some time on my planning. Sydney is approaching soon and I seem to become more and more obsessed by getting the planning right – although it’s something that I’ve been doing flawlessly for 2 ½ years, it seems now that I am double-checking and triple-checking everything. The fear of not getting there on time maybe!

I also recorded a podcast for an Ultrarunning magazine. I’m trying not to think about the upcoming end of the journey, but it is obviously a thought that keeps recurring. It is difficult to focus on simple things sometimes, as I seem to spend a lot of time trying to ignore the thought of the end of the journey. Running is going to be interesting in the next 2 weeks!
