Day 798 – Australia – NSW [Gerogery to Holbrook]

16/08/22

46km

From Gerogery (New South Wales) to Holbrook (New South Wales)

Australia

Another drizzly day on country roads, magpie rescue and onto Holbrook for a rest day

Magpie rescue!

That was a slightly longer day on the road today, close to 46km. The weather was similar to yesterday with some drizzle and grey skies. About 8km into the run, I spot a magpie on the side of the road. She is on the ground and moving slightly. Obviously been clipped by a car, but no blood to be seen. I take it in my hands and investigate. It seems she is mostly shocked but I cannot see anything broken. I wave at a motorist and they stop. They agree to take the magpie in a bag, keep it warm and take it to a safe place.

A very rural run today!

As I carried on running, I thought about the magpies and how they fiercely defend their babies. It’s not always the case in nature. I notice how sheep and ducks, when they see/hear me, always flee, running, with not a care in the world about their offsprings. One animal stands out though: cows. When they hear and/or see me, those who flee running always make sure the calves are protected, running amongst them and shielded from danger (me). Most of the time, a couple of older bigger cows even stay behind to face me whilst the herd runs away. Motherly protective instinct obviously isn’t universal in nature!

Kookaburra sits on tree….

I reached Holbrook today, after 10 days of running since Melbourne. I will get to spend a rest-day and visit the place. I have greatly enjoyed the past 10 days, even more so because what is to follow: the next 7 days of running, from Holbrook to Goulburn, will all be along the Hume Highway. Not my favourite ground for running, but it is what it is. Meanwhile, I shall enjoy a nice rest day in the country tomorrow!
