Australia

A quiet run on the highway and reaching the penultimate roadhouse of the crossing

Looking back in the mirror… Quite a way from Perth!

The morning was awesome. Waking up amongst the trees, in nature, with the local birds coming to check us out – and probably expecting the crumbs of our breakfast. It was warm again, the cold wind is no longer blowing – or maybe it is that I am sheltered from it by the surrounding forest.

Meeting Richard

On the second half of the run a car pulling a trailer slows down near me and the driver offers me a muffin. I obliged and the driver stopped to chat. “It’s the 3rd time I see you!”. He explains that he has taken it upon himself to keep the highway clean and patrols non-stop between the border village and Ceduna. I cut him off: “You must be Richard then!”. The look on his face was priceless. Phil and Joyce, the couple who are crossing Australia on a tandem and whom we met about 2 weeks ago, met Richard in Ceduna – and made a mention of him in their blog. How many people took it upon themselves to keep the highway clean? I knew there could be only 1!

Happy finish!

Tonight we stay at the Nundroo roadhouse camp. Not the fanciest we have met so far, maybe it is just too close to Ceduna I am guessing. We have met 10 roadhouses (excluding Fraser Range station and Yalata, which are closed). They vary in quality, especially in terms of the food they serve. Our favourite is the Madurah station, which boasts a proper restaurant with a chef (as opposed to someone who just nukes frozen dishes up!). I’m not holding my breath for tonight’s dinner!
