Australia

Cloudless skies, more Nullarbor plains… and my first dingo sighting!

Wild life… will I get lucky to see some?

I do prefer these nights in the wilderness rather than the roadhouses. We have a new gas bottle from the Border Village when entering South Australia and we also were able to refill our tank of water. Meaning we are once again self-sufficient. Roadhouses have their own perks, but it doesn’t compare to a night under a starry sky, with no noise and not a soul around for dozens of miles around.

Today’s skies

I started the day under cloudless skies and left James behind with his bike as he set out to explore the Koonalda cave – featuring some indigenous Australian artwork dating back… 20,000 years. There’s also a blowhole and a homestead there. Unfortunately I could not explore all these as I had a day of running ahead of me!

Making good progress!

Traffic was very light today. About 2/3rd into the run I spot an animal ahead, on the side of the road. It is very rare to see any (last time was the live joey I extracted from its dead mother pouch). I stop and stare ahead. The animal moves on 4 legs, it’s not a kangaroo… a dingo! Oh! It looks in my direction and I dare not move, we are maybe 200m apart. It suddenly lowers itself, belly on the floor like a scared dog would do and head into the bush. Next I see his beautiful bright beige fur every now and then and it runs very quickly and away from the road – and from me. No picture or video alas, I was just stuck watching as it unfolded.

Funny note: as I reached Nullarbor Roadhouse where we are camping tonight, I got internet access back on and a message from Tom Denniss (world runner 2013) who… informed me he had sighted a dingo close to the Nullarbor Roadhouse back 9 years ago. What coincidence..!
