Day 86 – EU – France/Italy [Nice FR to Ventimiglia IT]

40km

From Nice (France) to Ventimiglia (Italy)

Europe

Across another country into a new one: Italy – some steep uphill on a cloudy day

I left the West side of Nice to cross the city via the beachfront on the Promenade des Anglais. I was looking forward to today, as I would run all the way into Italy. What a journey… I was a bit nostalgic to leave France, as I only got to spend about 3 weeks in the country, which is not much. It has been a pleasant surprise in general to discover the Southern coast which I did not know very well.

As soon as I left Nice, I was greeted by some almighty uphill to the Col d’Eze, at 500m. The road was stunning but the effort was very tiring, as it all happened between km8 and km16. I then got to enjoy some much smoother downhill and run above the city of Monaco and across Menton.

Menton was the last French town before getting to cross the border, and I noticed how the architecture already looked different. Very colourful houses facing the sea on the hillside. I will spend about 6 weeks in Italy, going along the coast South towards Roma, cut East across Italy towards Pescara and North towards Trieste before entering Croatia. I am looking forward to all the country has to offer!

On a side note: Garmin missed recording the tunnels today (close to 2km). I am reporting based on Garmin, so these will be missed and not too important. If you have encountered this issue or if you know how to fix it let me know! (ie: in Spain, both Garmin recorders would always catch up the tunnel distance after I got out of the tunnel – today they behaved otherwise…).
