Day 812 – Australia – NSW [Moorebank to Sydney Opera House]

30/08/22

30km

From Moorebank (New South Wales) to Sydney Opera House (New South Wales)

Australia

And that’s a wrap! The 4th continental crossing is completed, the World-Run is (almost) done

With Pat Farmer through suburbia

Just before 8:30, James drove me to my re-start point in Moorebank, where I had stopped the run yesterday. The weather was beautiful, a good day in the making. There I met Pat Farmer who had committed, back in Melbourne, to running the final stretch to the Sydney Opera House by my side. There was plenty of time, the arrival was scheduled for 12:30 with only 30km to run.

Meeting James & Mark on their bikes, and Colin on foot

We ran together, chit-chatting our way through suburbia, stopped for a drink of Coke, the day was on the hot side. At km17, as we crossed the river in Canterbury, we met with James and his cousin Mark, both on their bikes, who started riding by our side. A bit further up the road at km21, at Petersham Park we met Colin – a friend from Edinburgh back 20 years ago when we both used to live there. And then we met with Leo a French journalist who filmed and shot various segments of the run. Two other runners met us by the Fish Market, Giovanni and Anthony, who had heard about the run on Facebook. A team from the French Chamber of Commerce joined our ranks at the Pyrmont Bridge, waving french flags as we ran along.

Flying the flags accompanied by a group of runners

By the time we reached the Botanics Gardens we were quite a sizeable group. And finally, beyond the thick vegetation of the gardens, I spotted the sea. The South Pacific Ocean, at last! And then we took a corner and there was the unmistakable shape of the Opera House. I pulled out the big French flag that James had bought me, ready to hold it high above my head as I crossed the gate towards the Opera House steps.

Waiting for me at the Opera House

There were a few dozens of people waiting for me, cheering on and waving French flags. The Consulate team, my parents, all my Sydney based friends, representatives of the Chamber of Commerce, the Alliance Francaise, some people who just heard about the world-run on social networks.

I couldn’t stop smiling, the sense of satisfaction, sheer joy, at finally reaching the mythical Opera House bulding. I wanted to talk to everyone, thank them for their support, share just how beautiful a journey it had been. I received a massive bouquet from the Consulate, with beautiful Australian native flowers. We posed for pictures, I shook a lot of hands and that smile wouldn’t leave my face.

A very happy and joyous finish

After about an hour, the little crowd dispersed and I was left with a few friends, my parents – and French journalist Leo who patiently waited to interview me.

That’s when Tom Denniss swung by, fresh from a business meeting in the city. What do two world-runners talk about when they meet?! It was fun that Tom, this year, has re-published (on FB) all his world-run blogs in chronological order from 9 years ago. His run across Australia, which was his final stretch too, had started in June (mine had started 29th April) – and he did finish his run just short of 2 weeks after me (9 yrs apart). In my mind I played a sort of race with 2013 Tom’s, I could see him catch up with me slowly slowly gaining ground (he was running 50km a day, no rest days). In a way it was a sort of re-run of his finish, almost the same route to the finish.

I spent a little bit of time with the journalist, shared lunch and a beer with my parents. And then it was time to relax. We were warmly received by James’ cousin Mark’s family, champagne and cheese, and a homemade dinner, which my parents attended too. What a finish, what an adventure it has been…

More about it tomorrow though, because though I have crossed 4 continents entirely and ran well above the minimal distance of 26,232km… I still have 1 run to go!
