From Great Western (Victoria) to Ballyrogan (Victoria)

Australia

Sub zero temperatures, beautiful bright blue skies and country roads

Frosty morning in Great Western

In my preparation for the Australian crossing, though I knew it would be winter time, I never expected temperatures to fall below zero. Well this morning it was -1 Celsius and the ground was all frosty. James had bought me some gloves a while ago, as a measure against my leaving the van every single morning invariably to the sound of: “Oh it’s a bit chilly out there?!”. They came very useful this morning!

Past Allarat’s town hall

I am now running away from the A8 motorway, south of it, through country roads and dust trails. I should not meet the big road again until I reach the outskirts of Melbourne in 5 days. These country roads are a delight for the solo runner, so quiet, surrounded by nature, cattle and mostly sheep everywhere. I got a bit upset somewhere along the road, as someone had obviously shot a number of foxes (I counted 9 of them) and left them to dry and rot on a small bridge by the road. I understand foxes may be a nuisance to the sheeps, but I could not understand the vile display.

Running along Geelong Road

For the first time in a long time I met James on his bike 15km before the finish. It was good for a change to have some company on the road. Though I have a travel buddy, most of my runs are still 100% solo. I often don’t get to see James between the moment he drops me at my start point and the moment we meet at the finish. But every now and then, it’s a nice surprise on the road to see him!
