A cold tranquil run on the Eyre Highway, on the way to Iron Knob

Posing with welcoming iron characters

The time for t-shirts and shorts is gone. Long tights and long sleeves, with the addition of a jacket have taken over. But still, it is quite pleasant. I reckon the temperatures go up to about 15 degrees at their highest. But that’s not counting the cold wind that brings it down by a few degrees. Overall though, it’s not too bad. And my water consumption is down to less than a 750ml bottle for a run. That makes my backpack much lighter.

James on the way to Lake Gilles

I met James on his bike at around 11th km. He was headed to Lake Gilles. A beautiful saline lake surrounded by a semi-arid mallee landscape. The conservation park is set as a great environment to watch the birdlife. Later on, James suggested we’d camp there for the night, but that would have meant quite a lot of commute.

Long straight and empty Eyre Highway

Instead, I elected to drive to Iron Knob for the night. After all, the camping ground was rated 4 stars on internet. Imagine our surprise as we drove through “town”, just a few streets of rusty abandoned buildings, covered in red dust. Pub is closed. Hotel is closed. Post office is closed. Local store is closed. A ghost town?! The camping ground looks alright but no shower or electricity in sight. It’s okay, that’s another fire and barbecue evening coming up!
