Back on the road, past the “Big Wombat” and into Penong

The road today

Last night at Fowlers Bay was lovely. The first small village we meet since leaving Norseman a month ago! We took a walk along the pier, did not spot any whales this time around. The sand dunes are really impressive from up close. The air was warm and it called for dinner outside. James had picked up a takeaway curry from the Nundroo roadhouse earlier on, it was quite a treat.

After the run, went to pose by the Big Wombat!

This morning I started with the driving, 26 km out of Fowlers Bay on the dirt road and 15 km on Eyre Highway to my re-start point. I left the van on the side of the road. James would be cycling from Fowlers Bay and exploring the area. He would then drive the van 42km to my finish point. One thing we wanted to see which we could not was the Aboriginal art gallery at the “Big Wombat”. All closed due to Covid…

Penong is known for its windmills – incl. the biggest in Australia

The landscapes are fundamentally different now. I saw a few flocks of sheep. Life on this land! First time since Norseman. Phone/ electricity lines and poles. Farmhouses. There is a sense that the crossing of the Nullarbor is definitely over. I finished the run 22 km west of Penong and we drove there for the night. It looks like a small village. And Penong is also the last roadhouse of the Nullarbor crossing. A good job done!
