Camping wild in the outback, running on a straight road, aboriginal stone art and fairy wrens

The open road today, colder but sunny

Yesterday evening (Day 714) we camped in the outback. We are now on the segment of road (190km) between Norseman and the Balladonia Roadhouse. As usual we enjoyed a great fire under the stars and barbecue. On the down side yesterday, we ran out of gas (ie: not hot water for the shower, and no tea or coffee) and there was also no internet (which is as much a good thing as it is a bad thing!). I could not post the blog – it will happen again . What I do is I write it anyway and wait till there is enough data to post it online. At most I reckon 1 or 2 days.

A gecko – stone artwork by the roadside

Anyway, today started a bit cold (mild) and dryer than yesterday. The road seems like a long stretch, going up, down, up, down – and it’s a good thing, so I cannot see the full straight line ahead of me! Halfway through I passed a place where there was some aboriginal stone artwork by the roadside. One depicting the symbol for a waterhole, one depicting a gecko.

FILE PICTURE (not mine) – A Fairy Wren like the ones I saw

As I took a break by the roadside, I was enjoying the quietness – several minutes pass between vehicles, it is very silent. I heard something in the bushes behind me and turned around quietly. There were a handful of Fairy wrens, with their long blue tail upright, moving around just next to me. What a stunning sight. Their tail was bright blue and I also spotted some blue around their face. I did not manage to reach the phone and take pictures quickly enough. So I put a file picture to show you what I saw.
