Australia

Rainy start, cool and drizzly morning and camping wild with no internet

Damp morning on the road

Last night’s torrential rains still subsided a little this morning. The national weather alert was still on for Western Australia, with “severe damaging winds” and rain alerts on. I pressed on nonetheless. It seemed the road I was on was pretty clear, rain had reduced to a drizzle and I was protected from the strong wind by the tall trees either side of the road.

Not much on the way!

And here I was, again, running on this stretch of road (190km) between the town of Norseman and the Balladonia Roadhouse. Just to be clear: Norseman is the last town I run through before “the big crossing” which includes the Nullarbor plain and desert. The next town after Norseman (east) is Penong in 1,200km (it can be argued Eucla too is a town, at 770 km away from Norseman – but you would really stretch the definition of a town). You get the idea, it’s getting pretty deserted – petrol stations and roadhouses are going to be our landmarks for the next month of running!

Barbecue master at work

I am amazed by the donations I am getting since starting the Australian crossing. I am only at 33% of my target (which was 1$ per 1 km run). But it has picked up big time since Perth. Cyclists I met on the Pipeline challenge, people I meet at hotels, bars, shops. They are pretty quick to give. Since starting out of Perth, I have already collected 11 donations amounting to $785. Aussie rules!
