A windy day on the trails and side roads of Western Australia

On the beautiful trails of WA

It was a bit cooler than usual as I started this morning. I noticed there was a bit of wind too and thought it would be good news, as it would potentially keep the little flies at bay. For the past two days, since getting out of Perth, I have experienced swarms of flies everytime I stop for a break. Dozens and dozens of tiny flies on my shirt and shorts, sometimes on my face too. The good thing is they seem to not stick around when I run. I have come prepared and have a face-net in my backpack for when the problem gets out of control.

My brightly coloured chatty friends

Meanwhile I enjoyed a great run, once again out of the Great Eastern Highway – using the trail by the railway line and pipeline. Far away enough from traffic to enjoy some quietness and the company of the many parrots and birds. The budgies, always flying in pairs, bright green feathers with a black neck and yellow beak. Very talkative, flying sometimes close to me but not in an aggressive manner. The galah, pink and grey parrots. Often flying in large groups, very curious, perching on a branch above my head when I take a break and looking at me upside down whilst making funny noises. I tried to engage in a conversation today with some success!

A blue tree

I also noticed some bright-blue painted dead trees and wondered if there was a meaning to it. In fact the “blue tree project” originated in WA a few years ago, encouraging people who have lost someone to mental illness to choose a dead tree and give it a new lease of life with the bright blue colour as a tribute to their loved one. They are a very bright sight on the trails and I only saw 3 in all so far.

Stunning landscapes

I am following so far the exact same route as Tom Denniss, world-runner #3 who ran from Cottesloe to Sydney exactly 9 years ago. I think I should follow the same route throughout the crossing – there are not many alternatives when crossing that continent! (http://www.tomsnextstep.com/)
