South America

A great running day, with low temperatures and overcast skies – a welcome relief!

Through La Paz green trails on an overcast morning

Following the 3 days of intense heat, I had been looking forward to the overcast day. Cloud, rain, wind, and around 10 to15 Celsius lower. That was enough to put a bright smile on my face again! Not that I didn’t enjoy the past few days, of course, but that was really good news and I was pleased about it.

A funky Santa Claus by the roadside

Franck and I set out early and we ran the first half fairly quickly. We were clocking at around 10kph and going strong. As we reached La Paz, we stopped by at the same cafe where we had our lunch and dinner yesterday. A coke and a Fanta later, we were back on the road and it was pretty uneventful. As always, when we spot the Campervan in the distance (1 or 2 km away) it gives us a special boost and our pace tends to rise.

Finishing Franck’s 4th marathon by my side

Franck has now completed 4 full marathons by my side. I am amazed how well he is doing. Although I knew from our Skype calls that he was really ready to join me, including his running of the “Diagonale des Fous’ ‘ on Reunion Island a few weeks ago (a 170 km race… google it for details!). It is a real pleasure to have him on the run, but not only.

Street barbecue in La Paz

Franck happens to be a journalist with a passion for sports and that includes football. He has written a book about the culture of football supporters. James is a Chelsea supporter, and it seems now, when the two of them got together there is always someone humming a football song!

Well tonight we set out to do a little barbecue. We lit the barbecue in front of our hotel, by the campervan. Cooked as usual some spaghetti on the side. And there we were, playing reggae music. And we found out that not only is Franck a true football insider with great inside knowledge, he also is quite the connoisseur in music! A great evening, in the street, by the barbecue and with the local dogs…
