Day 660 – South America – Argentina [Santa Rosa to La Paz]

10/02/22

42km

From Santa Rosa (Argentina) to La Paz (Argentina)

South America

Third hot day in a row, I’m glad I have company on those long straight roads

Off we went, on another hot day

We had a bit of commuting to do this morning, about 40km drive back to our re-start point. We started early and knew what was coming up. Today’s temperatures rose to 38 Celsius. Similarly to the previous 2 days, the first half went very smoothly. Then the sun started beating on us very brutally and we coped with having breaks every 5km – and then even less. Loads of water and sunscreen!

One long straight road…

We finished the run east of La Paz and drove to town. What a great finish, there was a little place near the bus terminal where we had food, ice cream and beer. It does not get any better after a marathon under the hard sun. I am feeling for Franck, who joined me from Paris (where it is currently 10 Celsius) and gets to run a week of marathon in the hottest weather of the past 6 months!

And that’s a 3rd in a row for Franck!

The stretch of road we are running on is quite deserted and it is not easy to find accommodation. We are lucky to have found a small hotel in the center of La Paz, but there is nothing much all the way to San Luis (except the Hotel Terma, a sort of SPA, which we will be happy to visit in two days – a bit of luxury doesn’t hurt after the really low standards of our accommodation lately!).

A word on the economics here… The official rate of exchanging money is roughly 1 USD to 100 Argentine Peso. However, and due to the incredible inflation that Argentina is going through for the past few years, there is an unofficial rate, also called “blue rate”, where the USD exchanges for above 200 Peso. That means for us, everything (food, accommodation, petrol) is extremely cheap. It tells something about how bad the situation is in the country…
