Day 641 – South America – Chile [El Convento to El Tabito]

22/01/22

38km

From El Convento (Chile) to El Tabito (Chile)

South America

Onto the busy coastal road, through the Llolleo hill of Cartageno, a very different run today…

Crossing over the Maipo river

A very contrasting run today. I started from El Convento, just south of San Antonio and Cartagena. Then I hit the morning traffic. It was Saturday and I guess the locals were all on their way to the beach. I had a cycling path to run on, sheltered from traffic, and it made the first part of the run quite stress free.

Roadside shack in busy San Antonio

Then I got to run up the LLolleo hill. What a contrast. The hill is very steep. Overlooking the port and beach of San Antonio. Looks like a pile of dust. Little shabby cabins everywhere, the whole thing looking like a shanty town, with garbage sprawn all over the place. Stray animals looking hungry roaming the streets. Young girls working the streets in skimpy outfits. It felt like after 1 month ½ of running through an idyllic rural Chile, I finally caught up with big cities’ suburban reality. Santiago is less than 100km away…

The coveted beaches early morning

I ran down the hill all the way to the seaside and through the local market. It was very busy and festive, music playing and colorful art displayed everywhere. I was happy when I was out of it and onto the main road. Saturday was very busy, that’s the most popular beach resorts I have hit since I started running along the coast. The next 2 runs will be inland, heading towards Valparaiso.
