South America

Company on the run today from Maurice, a Swiss runner living in Chile and a great day for running

With Maurice, a Swiss resident of Chile and keen runner!

This morning as I woke up I assessed the sciatic nerve inflammation was about 60% out of the way. I could still feel it and had to focus a lot to walk and run without triggering it, but I could feel it was much easier.

Yesterday I had announced that a Chilean runner had contacted me. Well it turned out that Maurice is actually a Swiss from Bern (I ran through Bern last March) who lives in Santa Cruz, just South of where I currently am. Maurice had been looking for me yesterday, but road side (not on the dust roads that I had taken). So we set up a meeting in Rapel today and got to run about 8km together.

Greenery – vineyards and lake in the background

It’s the first time a runner joined me on South America’s roads and I was very happy. Maurice is well traveled, having crossed Canada on his bike West to East, as well Chile North to South and many other journey-trips around the world. I really enjoyed the company, especially as Maurice really made the effort to look out for me, driving across and leaving his job at the Hostel for 2 days! Thank you for your efforts and all the best for your next trips!

Colourful Bougainvillier

Today I finished the run at a junction in the middle of nowhere, and we drove over to Cartagena for the night. I ran past the city of Cartagena in Spain on day 40 (2 years ago on 14th January 2020). The most famous Cartagena city in the world is actually that in Columbia, a port and a World Heritage city. There is nothing really special about Chile’s Cartagena – a popular seaside resort next to a big port.
