Day 629 – South America – Chile [Cobquecura to Curanipe]

South America

A coastal run, up and down the road on a sunny and misty day

A reminder of the 2010 tsunami

A beautiful run today. I headed out of Cobquecura, an oceanside town that bears some scars of the terrible 2010 earthquake & tsunami. Chile suffered a 8.8 earthquake and a tsunami wave devastated the coast of the country. Since Concepcion I have seen a few signs indicating the “tsunami escape route”. But I only understood why later. I saw some more signs today. And it’s hard to imagine the whole region had been completely devastated and flooded only 11 years ago.

The coastline today

The route was very undulating today. There is so much mist coming from the ocean, every time I hit 100m elevation I was deep into misty fog. It was sensibly colder too. But then I would descend back to sea level again and it would be warm and clear. A strange phenomenon – especially at such low altitude.

Rio Chovellen

I am now heading towards Constitucion, the next big city on the coast (on the way to Valparaiso). Unlike other continental crossings so far (Europe and North America) I have not much visibility on my planning. When James joined the journey, we made the decision to stay away from Route 5 (which was my initial plan) and instead try to run past the nice spots (the lakes and volcanoes, the coast). Due to the lack of consistently good internet connection, I have not yet planned the whole crossing at a stage by stage level of detail. I am learning to be quite flexible!
