Day 622 – South America – Chile [Coihue to Hualqui]

South America

Another grey and rainy day – a templemental summer in South America!

It seems we are going through a cold front for the next few days. I was prepared this morning and I got drenched and I got cold, just like I thought I would! I was running on the same road as yesterday and the day before. Yesterday was Sunday and it was really quiet, though we did see 3 accidents. Today, traffic was in full Monday morning swing and it was quite a hairy experience to run by the roadside. Most of the time the shoulder was nonexistent, so I ended up running on the slanted part between the road and the water evacuation thingy. My ankles got quite sore from running at such a steep angle.

Other than that, the landscapes were quite enjoyable. To my right was the vast Biobio River, to my left, the dense forest. I decided to stop the run at a road junction today. This way, I will be able to take a side road to run towards the Pacific coast tomorrow and avoid having to go through another run on this busy road. My running on the South American continent is a little below 40km/day at the moment. I am hoping it will progressively get back up to a slightly higher average.

We are staying for 4 nights at the same place: a little wooden cabin by a lagoon of the Biobio river. All we can see is the forest, the birds, the wildlife on the river… Very quiet and away from the agitation of the city nearby (Concepcion). We cook outdoor barbecues in the evening and enjoy the views. This is the last we will be staying south of the river that originally separated the Mapuche people from the western civilization. It’s very quiet and peaceful in the forest – well worth the morning and end-of-run commuting!
