Day 621 – South America – Chile [Nacimiento to Coihue]

02/01/22

39km

From Nacimiento (Chile) to Coihue (Chile)

South America

And the first run of 2022 was grey, rainy and almost cold

What a sudden change of conditions. The last few runs were very hot and I had tried to start earlier in order to finish before the temperatures got too hot. Today started very grey, rainy, or more like a drizzle in fact. As I progressed, the rain intensified, fog gathered on the road and amongst the trees. It got cold too. It almost felt like being in the mountains. I looked at my GPS and the elevation was between 100m and 200m throughout the run. Not anywhere near as mountainous as I thought it would be!

I finished the run at a junction named Coihue, though there seems to be more than one place named this in the region. I was cold, wet and very happy that I could change into dry clothes immediately – courtesy of the campervan that James had driven all morning.

We then drove all the way north towards Concepcion, near the big BioBio River. That’s where we will stay for the next 3 nights, as there is a certain paucity of accommodation in the region. The Biobio river used to mark the border between Mapuche territory (to the south) and the Spanish conquistadors (to the north). In 1893 that border was crossed as the Spanish invaded all the southern territories.

As we drove the 1hr stretch towards Concepcion, we witnessed 3 car accidents and 1 tree falling off on the road (we avoided that by about 100m). It was quite scary. The road may have been greasy from not having had rain for a long time. And as for the tree, some of these roadside trees have very shallow roots – not nice to have these by the side of the road.
