Day 599 – US – New Jersey/ New York [Jersey City to New York]

24/11/21

32km

From Jersey City (New Jersey) to New York (New York)

North America

Running into NYC to finish the North American crossing, with a warm and generous welcome by the Consulate – and my parents!

Setting out, Jersey side, looking out at Manhattan over the Hudson River

What a morning… I slept very little last night, I kept waking up, ready to hit the door and run. But it was never the right time. When it finally was time, I felt as excited as going for my 1st day at school! This continent crossing has been exceptional and (in contrast with the European crossing) marvelously going to plan. I had pencilled in the date of 24th November for my finish… as I was starting the crossing in Seattle on July 3rd!

Over the George Washington Bridge

I was greeted by bright blue skies again as I started running, as well as a much warmer sun than yesterday – that bitterly cold wind seemed to have died down a little. I ran about 20km along the Jersey shore towards the George Washington bridge and took the pedestrian path to run across. What beautiful views of Manhattan it gave me again… Traffic was busy, it’s the day before Thanksgiving and it seemed everyone was on a mission to drive somewhere. I went past all the traffic-jammed cars like the wind!

Manhattan from the Bridge

The Consulate had helped me set an appointment with runners in Central Park. So at 11:45 I was joined by over a dozen runners, most of whom had run the NY marathon two weeks ago. Lots to talk about as we ran through Central Park on the way to the Consulate. We then hit 5th Avenue and proceeded to #934 where the welcome committee was waiting.

What a joy… The Consul General Jeremie Robert and his staff were there, the Director of Women for Women International Ramone Segree, my parents, runners of the NYC marathon, children of the French School cross country team and more…

The joy of making it across another continent!

The Consul had organised a cocktail party and we all gathered there, sipping Champagne and eating petit-fours… whilst exchanging about the journey. Then the Consul gave a speech to welcome me and I improvised a thank you speech on the spot! About 2hours later we parted and I was shown to my quarters: I’m hosted by the Consulate for the next two nights in NYC before I fly towards my break & next continent!

I’ll have more pictures to share about the finish soon… it’s late in NYC and that’s my report of today’s event – I will update soon about my plans between now and the next continent crossing: South America!
