Day 598 – US – New Jersey [Edison to Jersey City]

23/11/21

44km

From Edison (New Jersey) to Jersey City (New Jersey)

North America

Penultimate run on the North American continent and some family time again

Sunny and cold start to the day

I did not get much sleep last night. I guess it must be the proximity to New York City and knowing that the Northern American crossing is getting to a close. I left Edison this morning feeling a bit frazzled and the bitter cold wind kept me wide awake. I was soon crossing suburbs, Rahway, Elizabeth, Newark… The buildings grew taller, the traffic grew heavier. The noise and intensity of the big city.

A different skyline on the horizon

I made it to Jersey City via the Lincoln Highway bridges over the Passaic and Hackensack Rivers. A beautiful bridge with a pedestrian sideway, which gave me a brand new view on Manhattan in the background. Quite a perspective on the most iconic skyline in the world!

Manhattan in View

As soon as I checked in, I showered and got ready to meet my Mum and Dad who were waiting for me on Ellis Island. In the rush I caught the wrong ferry and ended up on a ferry to Manhattan instead. Just what I needed! I made it late to Ellis island and it was just as well, my parents had already done the research work. I was treated to a great tour of the building. My dad’s grandfather had arrived through Ellis Island in 1907 from his hometown of Someo in Swiss-Italy. They found the record and I was glad that we were able to keep a copy of it somehow.

My great-grandfather’s passenger details… from 1907…

We took the ferry back to the Big Apple and I was treated to a nice meal downtown. How strange (pleasantly so!) to spend some family time here in New York. My parents will be in NY for another two days, we’ll have time to catch up… and next meeting with them is tomorrow at the finish line in Manhattan, how exciting!
