Day 572 – US – Ohio [Cleveland to Streetsboro]

28/10/21

41km

From Cleveland (Ohio) to Streetsboro (Ohio)

North America

Back on the road, against the bitterly cold southeastern wind on a sunny day

Sunrise on downtown Cleveland

For the next 2 weeks, I am running on a continuous southeast direction from Cleveland all the way to Pittsburgh, then to Washington DC. And as I started running this morning I realised I was right against the wind! It stung a bit, I think it’s time to wear the woolen hat again. All in all it made for a very invigorating run. The sun came out towards the end of the run, warming me up a bit.

Leafy suburbs, autumn colours

As I approached the hotel, I checked Google Maps and was surprised to see it sending me around town for a 6km detour – where the straight line was only 1.5km. I decided to follow the straight road. That meant running on the motorway for that 1.5km. The traffic was light, the shoulder was wide, I thought it was reasonable to attempt. Except I was quickly joined by 2 sheriff patrol cars who responded to “calls for a woman with a baby on the motorway”. What? I had not even run 500m on the road, I was surprised how quick the calls and response was… Anyway, I was truly sorry for wasting their time – that was not my intention, I apologised and promised to stay off the main road. They did not seem too bothered and told me to beware as other cops may want to issue me a ticket. Point taken.

Deceiving blue skies – you cannot see how cold it got!

The run itself had been quite varied. I left from downtown Cleveland, across the city center, past the baseball stadium. Then through the industrial area, kilometers on end of factories and trucks – a reminder that I am indeed in the “rust belt area”. Then through some very poor suburbs (one sign is always the poor state of roads and pavements, broken glass and syringes on the ground…). And then through the towns of Belford and Twinsburg, leafy suburbs and countryside towards Streetsboro. Quite a journey!
