Day 565 – US – Ohio [Wauseon to Toledo]

21/10/21

41km

From Wauseon (Ohio) to Toledo (Ohio)

North America

Another straight line run, under much heavier skies today – and meeting Connie one last time!

Cool and humid morning in Ohio

Last night there was a massive thunderstorm. I got woken up by the heavy downpour and the sound of thunder crashing all around. Quite impressive. I eventually fell back asleep, hoping it would have all dried out by morning… and it did! It was still quite humid, skies low and grey, but I had avoided the worst. Good.

That straight line again!

I was on another straight line run to Toledo. There are many things I do when the environment itself does not provide enough distractions. One of my favourites is the re-run of the world run.

I have all the stages in my mind, all 481 of them. I run them in order, one by one, town by town. From Cabo da Roca to Pisa and the 1st lockdown. Then from Pisa to Maribor and the 2nd lockdown. Then from Valence to Istanbul… And from Seattle to wherever I happen to be. I like this exercise, as I not only go through each stage by name, but I also recall images, people, flavours, colours… it’s like playing a movie in my head. And I have all the time in the world to do it. I also think it’s also a great exercise to train my memory and keep a continuous memory of the journey I’m on.

At the local pub with Connie

Mid-afternoon I met with Connie again! You’ll remember that Connie had greeted me last week with her friend Dave as I reached Gary Indiana. She took me out for drinks and dinner in Michigan City the next day. And today she drove hours to catch up with me one last time. I was very touched that she went out of her way to take such a long journey to get to share some time together. We shared some food and drinks at the local pub (though Connie had to drive all the way back, so it ended up with coffee!). Connie is connected with 1st world-runner Jesper, whom she assisted in his crossing of the US some 15 years ago… A veteran of the world-runs!
