North America

A hilly first run in Wisconsin, through very different landscapes on a sunny day

Out of LaCrosse on quiet country roads

At long last, a hilly run! I consider a “hilly run” anything that involves above 500m of positive ascent over the course of the marathon. It may not be considered much for some runners, but in my case, seeing as I push the equivalent of half my body weight in a stroller the whole run, you can imagine the effort it requires can be quite substantial! I looked at my records on Garmin, and I have to go back 1 month ago (Medora to Belfield, North Dakota) to find a run with such an elevation profile. It had been a while!

Up and down the many hills

The run went well, I took it easy, allowing for plenty of breaks along the way. The landscapes are now so different from what it was in Minnesota. Forested areas (in beautiful autumn hues), green fields and cattle. Wisconsin is known to be “America’s Dairyland” and my friend Lisa Bliss (whom I met in Washington) and who is from Wisconsin, told me they actually call themselves “Cheeseheads”. Trivia of the day, Wisconsin produces one quarter of the nation’s butter.

Today’s company

I did not get to meet anyone along the way. It seems to have dried out a little bit since I left North Dakota. The busier and more populated the places, the less spontaneously people come up to me to ask what I’m doing or if I need anything. Tomorrow’s a big day, hopefully not as hilly as today…
