Day 534 – US – Minnesota [Anoka to Minneapolis]

20/09/21

33.5km

From Anoka (Minnesota) to Minneapolis (Minnesota)

North America

Company on the run, it had been a while! Some rain – and reaching the biggest city since Seattle

Mississippi River shortly after sunrise, Anoka MN

I set out today with a spring in my step: not only will I get to reach Minneapolis today, the biggest city (by far) on my way since I left Seattle on 3rd July. But I would also be getting some company! David, a local runner, had heard about the journey and contacted me to organise some miles by my side. He was joined by Jacob, another local runner, and the first barefoot runner to join me on the journey!

We met as I was about 9km into the run. The plan was to turn towards the Mississippi River and run alongside the path. But… as we started out chatting and being distracted, we never actually reached the river path! By km18 I asked for a break – I was curious to see the map. We were not at all where I had planned, but still heading towards the city. So be it! Jacob started barefoot running after reading the “Born to run” book from McDougall. 10 years of this regimen and his feet are hardened, he runs beautifully, very lightly and is not afraid of whatever is on the ground.

It was lovely to have some company, it has been a while – the last runner by my side was Crystal who ran 7km with me on my way to Bozeman (Montana) 3rd August! We had rain today, and it did not bother me. It was again hot and humid this morning and the rain was welcome, it sort of cleared the air a little bit.

The Hennepin Bridge on River Parkway, Minneapolis MN

I entered Minneapolis from the River Parkway, a green and leafy neighborhood by the Mississippi River. I had beautiful sights of the Hennepin bridge – and the 3rd Ave Bridge, which is unfortunately undergoing renovations. I hope to have better views tomorrow when I go for a stroll across the city.
