Day 533 – US – Minnesota [Monticello to Anoka]

35km

From Monticello (Minnesota) to Anoka (Minnesota)

North America

A challenging run in changing weather conditions along the Mississippi River

Leaving Monticello MN at sunrise

How strange it felt when I stepped outside the hotel this morning. Temperatures were in the mid 20’s Celsius… In comparison it was below 10 yesterday morning and many mornings before that. It was substantially hotter than usual and also incredibly humid (above 80%). A stark contrast. I spent the first 20 kilometers figuring out how to adapt, I was sweating a lot more than usual and tried to keep drinking enough. But it’s not easy to do so when you have gradually adjusted to drinking very little! Anyway, by km 20 or so, I thought I had the hang of it.

Mississippi River shortly after sunrise

And then an almighty wind started to blow.. in my face! So again, how to adjust to that, and keep drinking and slow down.. I let the elements drive my pace and my effort. The change of conditions surprised me today and I don’t know what it is down to. Is it the proximity of the Mississippi River? Is it that famous “Indian summer” weather making its way? Tomorrow there’s rain and thunderstorms on the menu, warm and humid… And I’m glad there’s a rest day in Minneapolis at the back of it.

Pumpinks and Jack-o’-lanterns stand outside a barn

Anoka is dubbed the “Halloween Capital of the World” as it was amongst the first cities to host a Halloween parade back in 1920. I saw a lot of pumpkins and Jack-o’-lanterns stands along the way. Halloween is a month and ½ away… but they seem to be taking it very seriously around here!
