Day 522 – US – North Dakota/ Minnesota [Fargo to Hawley]

08/09/21

45km

From Fargo (North Dakota) to Hawley (Minnesota)

North America

Running into Minnesota with the wind on my back for a flat run to Hawley

Leaving Fargo at dawn

Fargo (North Dakota) and Moorhead (Minnesota) are twin towns set either side of the Red River. I left Fargo this morning headed to the Veterans Memorial Bridge to cross the Red River and enter Minnesota, the 5th state of the US crossing. Fun fact, the Red River is the only major river in the US to flow northward, all the way to Lake Winnipeg (in Canada) where it empties. It was also a reminder that Winnipeg (in my original plan) was a city I had intended to run through… but then, Covid later, border restrictions later… that was not possible.

By the Buffalo River all day

I was glad to kiss goodbye to the Interstate Road (which is going further south from Fargo) and to switch to more of a countryside road, the Old Highway 10. I had the option to run on the side road, a gravel road, and it made for a very quiet and peaceful morning on a road (a world away from what it feels like to run on the Interstate). I enjoyed the sights of the Buffalo River that was meandering by the side of the road. From Hawley though, the River flows up north towards Canada. But I will be seeing more bodies of water as I’m about to enter the lakes area.

Trees.. a long time since I saw so many of them!

And besides the lakes, I am also looking forward to something else, which is to meet again with Jan & Gerald. We had met in Medora, past the Painted Canyons. And not only did they pay for my meal, they offered to host me in Detroit Lakes. Which is exactly where I am headed tomorrow. And also incidentally, my first “crossing of paths’ in the US with world-runner Tom Dennis (2012/2013 www.tomsnextstep.com). I have a special recommendation to hit the Lakeside Tavern & Brewery on the lake – I’m on a mission tomorrow!
