Day 520 – US – North Dakota [Tower City to Fargo]

06/09/21

49.6km

From Tower City (North Dakota) to Fargo (North Dakota)

North America

All the way to Fargo, the last town of the North Dakota crossing, meeting yet more people

With Joanne, my host at the Tower City Inn

Last night when my host Joanne heard that I had been hitchhiking, she immediately volunteered to drive me back to my re-start point on the Interstate in the morning. I understand that no matter how cautious you are, hitchhiking will always be hazardous… I was very pleased and Joanne has been a very gracious and generous host, treating me to handmade rolls and chocolate and carrot cake yesterday! We parted as I launched again at sunrise from Exit 317 of Interstate 94, on my way to Fargo.

With Julia, the marathon runner from Medina

The running was easy today. I realise I have been gradually running downhill for the past few weeks. Not much every day, but from the 800-900m elevation I was at in Montana, I went down every day a little bit, to now around 300m+. It helps and it reminds me of how it felt so much easier when I was running in the flat Plains of Po in Italy.

As I was blissfully running by the roadside, I spotted a car on the far side. A woman came out in her running gear, though wearing flip flops (!) and ran towards me in the safety lane. Julia had read about my journey in the Jamestown Sun paper and spotted me randomly as she was driving back to Medina, where she’s from. Julia is a runner herself, training for a half marathon in Kentucky later this month. She also handed me some money, which again I’m transferring to the fundraiser for WFWI. I should meet Julia tomorrow, she offered to take me for a tour of Fargo and lunch! How sweet.

With Grace and Liam, from WDAY News Channel, Fargo ND

I made my way to Fargo and headed to the Broadway Square where journalists Grace and Liam from WDAY News Channel were waiting for me. We had a quick interview and it was a very nice meeting as both of them are runners, gearing up for the 1/2 marathon of Fargo later this month. I am also hoping they will run a few miles out of Fargo with me when I resume the run on Wednesday. I haven’t had runners by my side since Crystal ran 7km with me on my way to Bozeman Montana on 3rd August, over a month ago!

Tomorrow is a rest day and I will hopefully get to see all of downtown Fargo – which was a bit “sleepy” today as it’s America’s Labor’s Day today, many places are shut. Better tomorrow!
