Day 517 – US – North Dakota [Medina to Jamestown]

03/09/21

45.3km

From Medina (North Dakota) to Jamestown (North Dakota)

North America

A foggy and humid start – then blue skies were back and people greeted me joyfully!

Foggy and humid morning on the Intestate

As I set out this morning, it was very foggy and humid. I could not see more than 200m ahead. Luckily I was running on the gravel road out of Medina. Given how much rain has gone down the past 48hrs, all trails were pretty flooded. I could not possibly plan to run on the side road the whole way today, and therefore opted for another day by the Interstate. I’m lucky the traffic is light these days!

With Dan Filene, journey-cyclist from, from Maine to Oregon!

Running on the Interstate here is pretty uneventful. It just goes straight, no uphill, no turns… Suddenly I spot something on the other side of the motorway. A journey-cyclist! Dan stopped his bike and waved at me. I stopped too. We managed to meet in between the safe lane of the highway. Dan Filene had heard about me a while ago from Dan Miller (Blog # 506 – Medora to Belfield 23rd August). He is riding from Maine (east coast) to Oregon (west coast).

It struck me that Dan is going across the country the same distance I do (3500 miles or just over 5000 kms). Yet Dan is going 100 miles a day on his bike – against my 26 miles average. 35 days for Dan… 5 months for me! It’s a different experience, I reflected on this as I kept running.

With Ann & Fred, botanists and runners!

Further down the road, a car stopped by my side to check if I was alright. Fred & Ann are two retired botanists and runners – they took interest in the journey and we had a good time chatting, just as I was on approach to Jamestown.

The journalist of the Jamestown Sun has put the article online today and it seems people were aware of my journey today. I had a lot of people wave at me, honk their horn and give me thumbs up from the window. It’s really nice when it happens! Another fab day on the road… and I did enjoy the blue skies and sunshine!
