Day 509 – US – North Dakota [Dickinson to Richardton]

39km

From Dickinson (North Dakota) to Richardton (North Dakota)

North America

Cold and windy day on the road to Richardton, a small town with not much around

Launching under low grey skies

There was a big storm last night. It kept me up for a few hours, the rain was pouring. And as I left this morning the air was again noticeably cooler. The sky was grey, very low and there was a mighty headwind. I need to buy some winter gear, it’s getting too cold for my shorts & t-shirt. I knew I was on a straight line run and there would be no mountains or hills to break the wind. It was relentless!

It seems I am getting in a zone with low internet coverage. It’s lucky the road was straightforward today, I did not have to check for the route. But I noticed I went for up to 10km without signal – from what I can see, it all depends how close or far away I am from the interstate that runs south of where I run.

The only thing you can’t see in this picture is the mighty headwind!

I arrived in Richardton and was hoping to hit the local cafe, the only place marked as serving food. Unfortunately as I got there I saw it was shut. That left me with the local gas station and Dollar Shop as the only options for food. I managed an early check in at the motel and prepared lunch with bits and bobs. Again tonight, there is no wifi at the motel – and no 4G coverage. I am having to go out and walk the road till I find a place where I have reception, so as to post this blog on time!
