Europe

Last run in Italy, by the hills of the Slovene border and leaving the country by plane

Piazza della Vittoria, Gorizia

I started today’s run with a tour of Gorizia, past the castle and Chiesa di Sant’ Ignazio on the beautiful Piazza della Vittoria. One last round in yet another pretty Italian town. I headed along the border, across the Natural Reserve of Doberdo, very green and quiet. It reminded me of my crossing from Trieste to Hrusika in Slovenia last year, a very similar landscape. Very close geographically and nearly at the same time of the year.

BoB still weighing in at about 11kgs – hasn’t dropped any weight yet!

I finished the run in Ronchi dei Legionari where Trieste airport is located. It is a strange thing to run across Europe as I have done. Though there is indeed a continuous line across the continent, Covid forced me on three occasions to leave the run somewhere and start from another point. I know that I ran the whole way from Trieste to Thessaloniki last year. It is quite different to hop on a plane to get back to Thessaloniki and restart the run. I sure hope I won’t encounter the same issue on the other continents.

The view from above

The transit will last two days. This afternoon I flew to Roma. Tomorrow I will fly to Athens. And on Monday I will fly to Thessaloniki. My run will resume on Tuesday 1st June from Thessaloniki, at the point I passed last year.

From the plane I could see very clearly the magnificent rivers that flow from the Alps to the Adriatic sea. They are so bright and wide at this time of year, it looked like a painting. The plane also flew over Lake Bracciano which was my last stop before reaching Roma in April. It certainly gave me a different perspective on places I ran by.
