Day 367 – EU – Italy [Grosseto to Albinia]

Europe

Last day in Tuscany, among the fields, the vineyards and cypress trees

The challenge today was to avoid the motorway, the E80, which is the most obvious road (and that suggested by Google Maps curiously, for pedestrians and cyclists alike) all the way to Rome. I had planned to take all the side roads I could, to the exception of a 2km stretch where there was no choice but to use the said motorway. Needless to say these were not my favourite 2kms of the day.

I tremendously enjoyed the countryside. A mixture of small country roads and trails, meandering through vineyards and fields, sunny all the way. A brilliant last day in Tuscany. I crossed the Maremma region which hosts a fabulous regional Park through which I ran today. I had been really looking forward to seeing Tuscany, especially the countryside and it has not disappointed. What a terrific, well preserved, pristine, filled with history region. A favourite so far in the world run.

I stay today in Albinia, a small town near the junction between Tuscany and Lazio. Today was very windy and tomorrow promises to be even windier. Trying to avoid as much of the E80 as I can tomorrow will also result in a longer distance. All in all, I am happy to rest and put my feet up this afternoon (and hoping tomorrow will be a tailwind!).
