Another sunny run heading south on the italian coast

Leaving Follonica heading south

What a pleasure today’s run has been… All along the way there was a cycling path by the side of the main road, which I shared with runners and cyclists. And the main road was empty anyway, I’ve not seen more than a dozen cars on the way the whole morning. The current weather is ideal for me. Around 5 Celsius as I leave in the morning. Direct sunlight. Up to around 20 Celsius by midday when I arrive. My favorite!

Castiglione Della Pescaia

Halfway through I ran past Castiglione Della Pescaia. A 12th century fortress (“castello”) overlooks the beautiful city set between the sea and pinewoods. It was very quiet today, though I read that in normal circumstances this is the 2nd most visited spot on the Tuscany seaside. As I crossed the bridge and headed south, I was set on a trail through the pine tree forest, absolutely beautiful and quiet.

Piazza Dante Alighieri in Grosseto

I then left the seaside to cut through the country towards Grosseto. A truly superb city, with a pedestrian centre, a great Piazza with the San Lorenzo Cathedral, Palazzo Aldobrandeschi and the many modern sculptures that adorn it. The city is surrounded by a medicean wall dating from 1565. I managed a short walk around the city, looking for food (as all supermarkets were closed). I basically walked all around town until I found a little cafe that was still open, offering take-away pasta dishes. My kind of place! The guy cooked for me happily while I waited and served me an “aperitivi” to make time pass quicker. Perfetto!
