Day 115 – EU – Italy [Venice Mestre to Cortellazzo]

42.5km

From Venice Mestre (Italy) to Cortellazzo (Italy)

Europe

Another fine run under a nice cloud cover – sadly leaving Venice behind

Today’s logistics was very unusual. All of Google Maps itineraries had me leave Venice by boat (1 or 2 ferry crossings) and run on the seashore for 30km or so to Cortellazzo. I didn’t fancy getting on a boat with BoB, especially as I am trying to leave early these days to avoid the heat, and this would have gotten me out quite late. It would have equated a short day of running too, which I didn’t quite need.

I elected to reach a point at the junction of “Via Fratelli Bandiera” and “Via Della Liberta” which I passed yesterday (before the bridge leading to Venice). Recommencing from this point allowed me to run inland and for a standard distance too (42km).

The run was a bit of a mixed bag. A mixture of fine quiet trails and of a National Road with a shoulder narrow enough for 1 foot! It came to the attention of the local police that a woman pushing a stroller “with a baby” was running on the National Road – and naturally, I saw the flashing lights before soon. We had a nice chat and they were very supportive. They let me continue my journey and recommended some nice trails by the canals, which I did follow and enjoy!

I notice how the piece of cloth I am always carrying on top of BoB to wipe the sweat off of my hands and face, is now saturated by sweat less than 10km into the run. I am now drinking between 3 and 4 litres during the run… More than twice my consumption between December and March.

Tonight I sleep by the shore on the Mediterranean sea again, it’s been a while and it’s got some nice “beach resort” vibes which I am not insensitive to 🙂
