Day 375 – EU – Italy [Pontinia to Fondi]

From Pontinia (Italy) to Fondi (Italy)

Europe

A beautiful morning in the countryside, a sight of the mediterranean sea halfway through and a tough finish in Fondi

Sunrise out of Pontinia

What a beautiful morning! The landscapes were stunning throughout. The temperatures were quite low and as the sun rose it sort of steamed up from the ground and created some very beautiful and misty landscapes. The Aurunci mountains were visible in the background and I first mistook their shape with that of Vesuvio! I’m gonna have to wait two more days before I get to see the famous volcano, patience is in order.

By the sea in Terracina

Halfway through the run I crossed the city of Terracina, set by the sea. This was an opportunity to run a little bit more on the Appian Way and get to see the Temple of Jupiter perched up on a rock above the city. Quite stunning! I got told off by two women as I left BoB the stroller in the middle of the main piazza to wander around and try and take some good pictures. They were not happy with me for abandoning the “bambino” alone. It was too long to explain, I just took off like I was the bad mother they thought I was!

The trail to Fondi – kilometers of puddles!

The last part of the run took me back inland towards Fondi, lodged at the base of the Aurunci and Ausoni mountains. I had elected to run off the main road and onto trails running parallel to the canal. Alas that turned out to be a poor choice. The road was kilometers on end of holes and puddles – there must have been some rain lately because it was all a muddy mess. I had 5 painful kilometers, reduced to try and navigate the mess whilst keeping BoB the stroller from spilling. I was happy when I reached Fondi!
